What Is the Phoenix CO2 Laser?

Aesthetic laser therapy is commonly divided into two categories: ablative and non-ablative. Both types have benefits, and both help resurface the skin for non-surgical rejuvenation. CO2 lasers, like the Phoenix, are a type of ablative laser. During an ablative treatment, intense pulses of light energy are directed at the skin, removing the outer layer (epidermis). Simultaneously, the heat from the laser stimulates collagen production within the deeper layers of the skin (dermis) to improve skin texture and elasticity over time.

CO2 laser therapy is generally regarded as more effective than non-ablative lasers in combatting various skin concerns. This is because it serves two essential functions: removing old, damaged skin at the surface and stimulating collagen underneath the surface.

By removing older skin, CO2 lasers improve textural and pigmentation issues such as sun damage, acne scarring, active acne, and fine lines. Additionally, collagen renewal is crucial for long-term rejuvenation. This essential protein is responsible for the body’s healing properties, helping to heal damage on the skin’s surface and restoring a youthful glow and bounce.

What Can the Phoenix CO2 Laser Treat?

Because the Phoenix CO2 Laser utilizes two modalities–surface and deep layers–it has multiple benefits for skin rejuvenation in one treatment. Increasing collagen production has amazing benefits for revitalizing the skin, including tightening skin laxity and improving elasticity.

Additionally, the Phoenix CO2 Laser can:

  • Reduce visible scarring
  • Even out hyper-pigmentation
  • Tighten loose skin
  • Smooth poor skin tone and texture
  • Reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines
  • Minimize age spots and sun spots
  • Treat blemishes and acne

This laser treatment is excellent for patients of all ages, from younger patients looking to heal their skin from acne scarring to older patients wanting to reduce the signs of aging.

What Is the Phoenix CO2 Laser Treatment Like?

Ablative CO2 lasers are so effective because they penetrate deeper into the skin than other lasers, but they are a more intense treatment. Here’s what you can expect from your CO2 laser session.

Consultation

A consultation will be required to ensure the safety and efficacy of your laser treatment. Your board-certified plastic surgeon or licensed laser technician will examine your skin to determine the length and amount of laser treatments you will need for your specific goals. Additionally, it’s important to report your complete medical history to ensure your safety. Ablative lasers may not be safe for:

  • Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • People who have extremely sensitive skin
  • Contraindications in medications or health concerns

The Laser Treatment

To prepare for your laser treatment, you may be advised to stop using harsh chemical skincare such as retinoids or chemical exfoliants. It is also a good idea to arrive at your appointment with clean skin, free of cosmetics and lotions.

Your laser technician will apply a thin layer of a topical anesthetic to the treatment area, which will be left on for a few minutes to numb the area. This is for optimum comfort during your treatment. Then, your technician will pass the laser across your skin, paying particular attention to areas of concern. Treatment may last anywhere from 30-45 minutes, depending on the severity of concerns and the amount of revision necessary.

Ablative laser treatments are generally tolerable, but you may feel some warmth and a slight pinching sensation from the laser’s heat.

Recovery

Ablative lasers work by removing the top layer of skin. You can expect a period of redness and possible swelling immediately after your treatment. This should subside within a few hours and can be treated with a cold compress. Your skin may remain red for the next few days following treatment before you enter the peeling period. About 2-3 days after treatment, your skin will begin to scab. This is perfectly normal and a crucial part of the healing process. Eventually, the scabs will start to shed, revealing younger, glowing skin underneath.

Avoiding sun exposure and always wearing a strong SPF are essential throughout the recovery period. Additionally, you should keep your healing skin hydrated and moisturized to ensure a smooth recovery.

Results

After 1-2 weeks of recovery, your skin will be smooth and revitalized. Depending on your original concerns and treatment plan, you will see improvement in fine lines and wrinkles, as well as reduced redness and hyperpigmentation.

The benefits of collagen production will continue to become visible as it takes time to build up in the body. Increased collagen will provide greater elasticity, tighten the skin, and keep you glowing.
